The world market of transport and logistics services is one of the most important and dynamically developing sectors of the world economy, which ensures the continuity of international trade.
Beltamozhservice is the largest national logistics 3PL operator and company, where a multifunctional logistics ecosystem has been created, including 7 branches, 9 class "A" transport and logistics centers, 14 temporary storage warehouses, 11 customs warehouses, 10 public warehouses, its own automobile and railway rolling stock and more than 1,200 types are provided services. Every day, 2,500 people ensure the vital activity of the enterprise and improve the quality of services. Delo magazine talked to Vadim BABARIKIN, General Director of the Republican Unitary Enterprise Beltamozhservice, about the company's successes and future development plans.
– Vadim Alexandrovich, please tell us what the year 2020 was like for the company?
V.A.: Last year, the functioning of the transport and logistics services market was significantly different fr om previous periods. The previously accumulated experience of a logistics operator in situations of social and economic instability was only partially applicable, since COVID-19 became the main factor influencing the work of the entire world economy.
The pandemic has made its "contribution" to the development of partnerships, affected cargo traffic, and consumer demand has changed. At the beginning, we were worried that the transportation market might suffer from a decrease in the economic activity of business entities, and later it became clear: despite all the difficulties, in 2020 RUE Beltamozhservice provided positive dynamics to the level of 2019. I believe that this is the success of the entire Beltamozhservice team.
– Your company is actively developing, you offer more and more services, and what else are you doing to increase profits? Perhaps you are improving equipment, additionally training employees, taking experience from foreign firms?
V.A.: First of all, it should be noted that our company is constantly working to improve the quality of services provided in existing areas that have remained key for us for many years (these are transport and logistics services, customs, warehouse, service and others). All specialists of our company periodically take advanced training courses, as well as take an active part in specialized seminars and trainings that are organized both within the company and at the national and international level. In addition, we understand that in order to remain competitive and become one of the leading enterprises in their field, it is not enough just to develop. It is necessary to constantly monitor all the best and advanced things that appear on the market of our services, we should also learn from our competitors, so we try to follow these principles.
– Who do you consider competitors in Belarus and abroad?
VA: There is such a business rule: "If you don't have competitors, then you don't have a market." Today there are many companies specializing in international cargo transportation, but it is not so easy to navigate them and choose the best one. Customers need not so much cheap as high-quality services in the first place. Only a reliable contractor is able to ensure fast and safe transportation of cargo.
Speaking about Beltamozhservice, we pay special attention to increasing the transport and logistics potential, implementing new logistics chains and projects with domestic and foreign carriers. And when analyzing successful international experience, we find new points of economic growth.
– Which of the offered services do you do most often, which of the offered makes you popular in the market?
V.A.: If we open the rating of the TOP 100 Belarusian transport and logistics companies for 2020 in terms of the volume of logistics services rendered, we will see that RUE Beltamozhservice heads it. To talk about the popularity of a single service on the market, probably, will not be quite correct and correct. Yes, of course, new services are emerging and this is dictated by time itself, but it is not necessary to say that any others from the entire list of services of the enterprise in this regard are losing their relevance. For example, until recently, a little-known service for labeling goods is becoming increasingly popular today, which is due to the establishment of mandatory labeling requirements for certain types of products at the EAEU level. But at the same time, it cannot be said that the increased popularity of labeling services has somehow negatively affected, for example, the demand for customs services that our company is engaged in. In general, all the services of our company are in demand, and new ones are accepted by customers with pleasure.
– Vadim Alexandrovich, what global trends in the field of cargo transportation do you adhere to?
V.A.: We pay special attention to multimodal transportation, which is becoming more and more popular every year. We have purchased containers, container ships, railway platforms for the transportation of containers. And I can confidently say that all this works effectively and brings in income, because it is really a very convenient way of transporting goods. For example, in China, goods can be delivered in 14-16 days in this way. From Belarus, the goods go to China, wh ere they are unloaded, the container is loaded with Chinese products that go further through China or to Europe. Our country is very conveniently located in the China—Europe corridor, and this should be used effectively.
– Have you thought about expanding the list of services? What would you like to bring new to the company? What are you working on now to develop the quality of services provided?
VA: Currently, our company is actively working on expanding the list of services provided. We strive to create the most comfortable conditions for our customers and offer them a range of services covering all stages of delivery of goods, as well as various related services (for example, voluntary insurance of civil liability of vehicle owners - individuals (individual entrepreneurs), legal entities).
One of the tasks assigned to the enterprise from the moment of its formation was the creation, and subsequently the continuous improvement of the transport and logistics infrastructure, as well as the material and technical support of its vital activity. We continue to work actively in this direction.
– Will cooperation with China continue? How did the signing of the agreement on the further development of the logistics network between Belarus and China affect it?
VA: Of course, this direction will develop. Since 2016, RUE Beltamozhservice has been actively implementing projects within the framework of the "One Belt, One Road" initiative for the transportation of goods by rail as part of organized container trains, being both a consignee, a shipper and a forwarder. Today, any Belarusian exporting organization can contact Beltamozhservice to organize the shipment of cargo to China. The company provides a full range of services: starting from the conclusion of purchase and sale transactions, the formation of batches of goods, obtaining the necessary documents, interaction with government agencies, ending with the direct delivery of goods to the place of sale.
– Vadim Alexandrovich, you took office relatively recently - in the summer of 2019, what have you already managed to do and what are your plans?
V.A.: The success of RUE "Beltamozhservice" is based on the long-term experience of the company's employees, gained over the years of development of the logistics services market. Speaking of achievements, I would like to recall some facts about Beltamozhservice.
We became the best freight forwarder in 2020 and topped the rating of the efficiency of the functioning of logistics centers in Belarus, opened a temporary storage warehouse in Mozyr and a multimodal complex in Bobruisk, a waiting area with an electronic queue system "Kamenny Log" and "Benyakoni". Implementing the "One Belt, One Road" initiative in 2020, we have shipped more than 40,000 thousand tons of Belarusian–made products to China. We received a certificate for air transportation, represented the country at the world-famous China Import Expo and TRANSRASHA exhibitions, opened about 36 retail outlets throughout the republic, and our website won the prestigious THIBAULT Award. Beltamozhservice was one of the first in our country to receive a GDP certificate for compliance of its warehouse complexes with high international standards for the storage and processing of medicines. Over the past year, we have managed to significantly improve not only the social support of our employees and their families, but also to increase their wages by 43% compared to 2019.
It is gratifying that positive results do not stop, but only push the company to achieve new, no less ambitious goals. Beltamozhservice is actively working to improve the quality and increase the number of services provided, expand its own fleet, and develop new areas of activity.
